The Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) updated their cow-calf returns for the Southern Plains last week and is now showing returns that rivaled 2014. Stronger calf prices than anticipated have progressively brightened the cow-calf return outlook this year and in recent weeks 500-600 pound steers were approaching $270 per cwt.
LMIC revised its fall calf prices, which are a primary driver into their cow-calf return model to $240-$245 per cwt., implying the steer calf market may soften with fall weaning calves coming to market.
